How to Use a Chainsaw Safely

A chainsaw is a hazardous tool to own, as while using it might get an intense flesh injury or minute pieces of what you’re cutting might enter your eyes. If you don’t use proper safety equipment there will be horrific consequences. At Alberta Small Engine Services, we offer a variety of chainsaws that are easy to use and durable. We also provide new inventory, equipment, rentals and OEM parts.

Five Ways to Safely Use a Chainsaw

Here are a few tips for using your chainsaw safely:

1. Go through the instruction manual

If you are operating a chainsaw for the first time, it is best that you read the manual provided with the product thoroughly before using it as every model varies in its functions and usage. Reading the manual helps you figure out how to use the chainsaw and also provides you with product-specific information.

2. Get protective equipment for safety

Chainsaws can be dangerous to use as the blade could cause injuries and also, there’s a high risk of branches falling on you or wood chips entering your eyes. Therefore, you should wear proper safety equipment while using the chainsaw. Wear proper gloves, a face screen and chainsaw chaps for protection.

3. Find out how to start a chainsaw

Drop-starting a chainsaw is a bad idea; don’t do it. There are two methods by which you can safely and successfully start a chainsaw.

  • Place it on the ground and hold it securely with one hand while you pull-start it with the other hand.
  • Position the chainsaw between your legs, be careful of the blades, and simply hold it with one hand and pull start it with the other.

Make sure you see a video demonstration or a real-life demonstration before trying this at home. Also, always work under expert supervision.

4. Determine where the tree will fall

While you are cutting through a branch, there is a high chance of the branch falling on you. To avoid this, pay close attention to the branches that you’re cutting and change your position if you think the branch can break and hit you.

5. Don’t use a chainsaw indoors

Tools which run on gas emit CO2, which is harmful. If you let gas build-up in an area that is poorly ventilated, the consequences could be fatal. So, if the chainsaw you’re using runs on gas, make sure you only use it outdoors or in areas that are properly ventilated.

Safety comes first, no matter what equipment you’re using. Make sure you take prevention to avoid any injury while using chainsaws. Contact us at Alberta Small Engine Services to choose from our high-powered and easy to balance chainsaws.
